If you’ve spent any time on my website, Tiktok or Instagram, you already know that I’m all about food freedom. While it’s often understood that food freedom means stepping away from diets forever, today I want to dive deeper into what it truly means to be free.
When I first started my journey, I didn’t even realize I had a problem. I thought being a woman meant constantly depriving myself, smiling through a salad while feeling empty inside. The idea of being “allowed” to eat whatever I wanted felt impossible. How could I possibly trust myself to eat freely without spiraling out of control? I thought I’d eat everything in sight, starting with the “worst” options. (There are no “worst” options, all foods have value and can be a part of a balanced eating world.)
This fear is completely normal. Most women I talk to are terrified of letting go of dieting (in all its forms) because trusting our bodies seems so foreign. Almost every client and student of mine faced this issue. We’ve been disconnected from our bodies for so long that the idea that they know what they need feels unreal.
And I get it—starting this journey can be terrifying. If you aren’t scared at first, you probably haven’t fully committed to the process. Because when you really dive into understanding your body and your relationship with food—when you start to ask why you eat instead of focusing on what you eat—things can get uncomfortable.
This is exactly why some women don’t even consider tuning into their intuition, which, ironically, is one of our greatest strengths. It’s easier to focus on controlling our food, aiming to “lose weight” or “get fit,” than it is to sit down and say: “This is my life and this is my body. I am ready to take care of it, gently and with compassion, because I deserve to prioritize myself.”
But once you find that kind of courage and take back your power, the transformation is incredible. You become a strong, unstoppable woman who knows her worth—and has all this new energy to focus on creating her best life, instead of shrinking.
True personal freedom begins when we decide to take responsibility for our lives and reconnect with our bodies, ourselves. Part of that freedom is deeply tied to food. Society has conditioned us to link our worth to our size, making us believe that reaching a certain number on the scale will magically improve our lives. Many of us have been praised for losing weight, reinforcing the idea that success and health equal thinness or being a “perfect dieter.” (Spoiler alert: it absolutely does not.)
Dieting and obsessing over food only take away your power. You end up handing it over to numbers—whether it’s calories, pounds, or inches. This obsession distracts us from what’s really going on: the fear that we aren’t enough as we are. The fear that we cannot trust our bodies. The fear that we cannot succeed or be healthy if our bodies don’t fit the perfect beauty standard. (All valid fears!)
When you finally break free from dieting and let go of all the baggage, you emerge transformed. That’s the essence of food freedom. It starts with food but ends up transforming your entire life.
As I always say—intuitive eating leads to intuitive living.
The freedom you gain is remarkable. Imagine feeling hungry and eating whatever your body craves without judgment, without calculating how much exercise it’ll take to “earn” it. Imagine planning a meal with family or friends without anxiety, or enjoying a cookie without guilt. Imagine knowing you can pursue your dreams regardless of what you look like—because you are already enough.
Here’s the most amazing part: When you allow yourself to eat what you want, food loses its power over you. That cookie you once obsessed over? It stops being special when you stop telling yourself you can’t have it. We naturally want what’s forbidden, but when we give ourselves permission, the obsession fades.
So, what is food freedom?
It’s a way of living where your self-worth is no longer tied to what or how much you eat. It’s the ability to take care of your health like you would take care of someone you love. It’s the freedom to make conscious choices about food, while being at peace with those choices. It’s knowing that all foods can fit into your life, because they are just food. They have no moral value, and reflect nothing about your own value—you know you’re not “bad” for enjoying cake, nor are you “good” for choosing salad. Your worth isn’t tied to the foods you choose (or a number on the scale, for that matter.)
One common fear is, “Won’t I just eat junk food forever if I allow myself this kind of freedom?” I used to think that, too. But the reality is quite the opposite. With food freedom, you get to create your own balance—of course you will regularly enjoy fun foods, but you will definitely also crave vegetables, fruits and other nutrient dense foods. I promise! As I mentioned earlier, when we stop putting certain foods on a pedestal of “they’re so bad for me” and “I really shouldn’t” , they stop feeling special and the urgency to eat them disappears. Because you know you are allowed to have cake every day for the rest of your life.
With intuitive eating, you build confidence around food – so you can enjoy it when you want, and walk away when you don’t.
It’s really that simple!
